Cebu is an island province located in the central Visayas. It’s perhaps better known as the “Queen City of the South”. Cebu continues to be a top tourist destination for tourist from all over the world. The United Kingdom based Condé Nast Traveler Magazine named Cebu the fourth best Asian-Pacific island destination in 2009.

Cebu is one of the oldest cities of the country and is rich in history. Ferdinand Magellan landed there in 1521 and was later killed in the battle of Mactan by Datu Lapu-Lapu. There are monuments to the two men at Mactan, the location of the battle. This is a popular spot and not surprising given the history and it’s a very interesting place to see.



Taoist Temple

Some other landmarks to visit are the “Basilica of Santo Niño”. Originally built in 1565 and rebuilt of stone in 1739, it still stands today and is in use. The Cebu Taoist Temple is open to the public. The temple includes a chapel, library and a souvenir shop. The large spacious balconies offer a beautiful scenic view of the downtown Cebu City. While you’re in the area, take a ride to the “Top”. It’s a small park located at the highest point in Cebu and offers some spectacular views in any direction, especially at night when you can see the city lights.


Sinulog Festival

If you happen to be visiting in January you might want to attend the “Sinulog Festival”. Its held during the third week of the month. There are also numerous beaches and some world class diving on Mactan Island. If you like to shop there are numerous public markets and shops to visit as well as multi story mega malls like, Ayala Center Cebu, Robinsons Mall, SM-Cebu and a local favorite Gaisano Malls.


Shangrila Mactan Cebu

Not enough for you. Then how about the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Mactan. Cebu has many fine restaurants and night clubs for those that enjoy fine dining and the night life. You can also go island hoping to one of the hundred and fifty plus islands surrounding Cebu or visit the waterfalls at Barili or Kasawan. Regardless of what time of year you visit or what your interest are, you’re bound to enjoy yourself and have a vacation that will offer will provide a lifetime of memories.
